Gov. Andrew Cuomo is calling on the federal
government to step in and get more vaccines to New York City as the push to get
people vaccinated ramps up.
Cuomo says there's the desire for the vaccine
and the ability to get people vaccinated, but availability is a problem. He
says they only get 300,000 doses a week and that is not enough.
Cuomo says 7 million New
Yorkers are now eligible to get vaccinated, but actually getting an appointment
is proving to be difficult. He says residents should be prepared for the fact
that they may not be able to get an appointment for three months or longer.
In addition to the city-run
sites, five state run
sites are also opening this week, including one at the Javits Center, which is
no stranger to the fight against COVID-19. The facility was transformed into
the country's largest field hospital at the height of the pandemic.
Health officials say they have the ability to
vaccinate about 10,000 people a day at the Jacob Javits Center, but can't because
they don't have enough vaccines
"We have the ability to
ramp that up to 25,000 people in a 24-hour period with the resources that we
have in place here," says Director of Emergency Management Michael Kopy. "Now, with that said we can't do that
without vaccines coming to New York from Washington."
