DA to add assault charges in Kingsbridge explosion
Two men linked to the Kingsbridge explosion that killed an FDNY chief learned in court Tuesday that prosecutors want to add assault charges in both of their cases.
Authorities say Julio Salcedo-Contrer rented the apartment that exploded. He is also accused of using it as a marijuana grow house. Garivaldi Castillo is charged with criminal possession of marijuana for his alleged role in the operation.
More than 50 firefighters from numerous battalions packed the courtroom during the proceedings.
A lawyer for Castillo described him as the father of two young daughters and said he would fight the charges.
Both men are due back in court on Oct. 19.
It's been a week since the deadly home explosion, and authorities are still on scene investigating.
The home on West 234th Street blew up last Tuesday morning, killing Deputy Fire Chief Michael Fahy and injuring 20 others.
Authorities say the home turned out to be a marijuana drug lab, and that a tampered gas main is what caused the explosion. Police say that a deviation of some sort was found in the basement of the home, and the gas pipe leading into the home that exploded has been sent to a lab to be tested.
Con Edison crews on scene tell News 12 that all heat and hot water has been restored to the surrounding homes.
