The 9/11 Day organization held its seventh annual community giveback event at the Intrepid Museum in Manhattan on Monday.
Thousands of volunteers packed meals that were donated.
The event pulled nearly 3,00 volunteers and was planned with NYC Services, the 9/11 Memorial Museum, and many other groups.
Co-founder of 9/11 Day Jay Winuk says the day is about how people can come together in the way they did on 9/11, and how the day hits closer to home for him after losing his brother on 9/11.
“He lived his life in service to other people,” said Winuk, referring to his late brother who was a first responder on 9/11. “This is the best thing that can happen in honor of those who came together after the attacks. Once again we renew that spirit of common humanity that was so evident after the attacks."
Eleven other cities also took part in today’s event, saying they are slated to pack millions of meals for City Harvest and Food Bank of New York City in an effort to combat hunger.
