Details on a new initiative for immigrants in New York were released today at the National Immigration Integration Conference in Downtown Brooklyn.

The goal of the three-day conference is to tackle some of the key issues immigrants face.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, the keynote speaker, announced a new $7.9 million initiative called "Action NYC" that aims to help immigrants better navigate the legal system. Mayor de Blasio says the plan will create organizations throughout the city where immigrant New Yorkers can get secure and safe screenings regarding their immigration legal options.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo also discussed the importance of welcoming immigrants into New York communities and steps the state has taken to provide more inclusive opportunities and protection for exploited workers, many of whom are immigrants. Under Gov. Cuomo, New York state directs more than $1.8 billion for medical and legal services to legal immigrants, and bilingual education for both children and adults.

"Action NYC," which received positive feedback at the conference, is expected to start in the spring of 2016.
