Mayor Bill de Blasio and members of New York’s congressional delegation came together Saturday to call for the 25th Amendment to be invoked.
The local politicians took to the steps of City Hall urging Vice President Mike Pence and Cabinet members to declare President Donald Trump incapable of performing his responsibilities as president.
“Anyone who is that treasonous, anyone who has lost control of his mental abilities to that level as to start an insurrection against the United States, should not have his finger on the nuclear button. He needs to resign right now," said the mayor.
If the 25th Amendment isn’t invoked and the president doesn’t resign, the House of Representatives is planning to introduce an article of impeachment on Monday, charging the president with incitement of insurrection.
It would need a majority vote in the House before moving to the Senate.
Even though there are only 11 days left in his term, some Congress members say every second counts because they view Trump as a clear and present danger who should no longer be president.
