Changes are coming to the Westchester Avenue Bridge after years of complaints and dozens of accidents.
Phase one of the bridge reconstruction began Monday and is expected to cause major closures and delays for the next 14 months. Construction crews will be raising the Westchester Avenue Bridge above the Hutchinson River Parkway because taller vehicles and most trucks can't clear the overpass, which has made the area prone to accidents.
The south side of the bridge will be the most impacted. Lanes and the sidewalk will be closing between Ericson and Waters Place.
One of the lanes on the north side will be used for southbound traffic so cars can pass both ways while construction is taking place.
The lane changes will be in effect through September 2018.
