The
Department of Sanitation of New York recently brought down three people accused
of illegally dumping their trash, but the issue is far
from solved.
Residents
in East New York told News 12 that illegal dumping has been a consistent issue
for them. DSNY says it is cracking down on illegal dumping activity.
Photos
from DSNY show people clearing a truckload of trash in East New
York, only to put it right on top of another pile. DSNY says cameras it
has installed has led the department to catch more
people.
The
fines for illegally dumping start at $4,000, and those who illegally
dump from their cars can have their vehicles impounded.
DSNY
plans to install 40 more cameras through East New York to help keep the
neighborhood clean.
“If
you’re going to put the cameras up and it can actually stop people from dumping
the trash, then cool,” said local resident Carmen. “But if you’re going to put
it just for show, it makes no sense.”
DSNY
urges anyone who witnesses illegal dumping to call 311.
