As New York City gets closer to the return to in-person learning for students, the Department of Education says more positive COVID-19 cases have come to light.
P.S. 149 in East New York is one of the 56 schools where the Department of Education says a test came back positive, but says action has been taken and they will be open today. In fact, of the 56 schools, only one is remaining closed.
That school is P.S. 139 in Flatbush. News 12 was at the school Monday as teachers sat on folding chairs on the ground outside of the building in protest, sharing concerns about ventilation and sanitizing at the school.
The DOE confirms there are two positive COVID-19 cases from separate classrooms. The DOE says anyone who has tested positive is isolating. News 12 is told contact tracers and the Department of Health are following up on all confirmed cases to ensure anyone who needs to be is quarantining.
Meanwhile teachers in the Bronx Tuesday also took their work outside. News 12 stopped by Wings Academy High School along with P.S. 209 where some of the staff voiced what they’re calling serious concerns.
Starting in October, the Department of Education says all schools will have mandatory monthly random testing.
