A Mount Hope building superintendent found a beaten, abused dog stuffed in a trash can on East 178th Street Monday, police say.
The can itself was buried in a pile of garbage bags outside 361 East 178th St., says the superintendent, Alfonso Williams.
The dog, a poodle, had injuries to its face and eyes -- and also a broken leg, police say.
Williams says he found the pup near the bottom of the can and believes it was left there to die.
He says he was doing his Monday morning trash collection earlier than usual.
"If I didn't come in...it would be dead, because somebody put the garbage directly over the next bag, and it would've suffocated," Williams says.
Residents took the dog inside, wrapped him in a blanket and fed him until police arrived. They say he was shivering and clearly in pain.
Authorities took the poodle to a shelter on East Fordham Road in Belmont.
Police described the incident as animal cruelty.
