Nonprofit organizations gathered in St. Mary's Park today to raise awareness on overdose deaths in the Bronx.
The city's Department of Health partnered with the Harm Reduction Coalition to host the event called Overdose Revival to bring attention to the ongoing overdose deaths in the Bronx.
Officials say the number of overdose deaths in the Bronx is the highest in the city.
To help save lives, the nonprofits in attendance provided services including clinical programs, and syringe access programs which gives clean syringes to users because they say it also saves lives by preventing HIV and hepatitis C.
Narcan training is also being given by another nonprofit.
The city says it takes a holistic perspective to treatment.
"Really emphasizing the fact that in order to help people through recovery and to reduce the number of deaths, due to opioid deaths, we need to have a coordinated holistic approach that takes into effect not just the clinical but things like housing, things like social support, jobs, et cetera. It's the whole picture,” says NYC DOH First Deputy Commissioner Oxiris Barbot.
This is the first annual event and they plan on holding more in the future.
