New York City will soon see electric-powered bikes with motors that will give riders a boost during their commutes.
The Department of Transportation says the new bikes will include pedal assist, meaning riders will get an electric boost of up to 20 mph.
The bright orange bikes are made by a Brooklyn-based company recently acquired by Uber. Jump is one of five companies working with the DOT to roll out the city's first dockless bike-sharing pilot.
The DOT says 100 Jump bikes will roll out in the Bronx and another 100 in Staten Island, starting in late July.
Unlike Citi Bikes, which have to be parked at designated stations, Jump bikes can be parked at public bike racks within the Fordham section of the Bronx and northern Staten Island.
To rent a bike, patrons must download the Jump app. A bike costs $2 for a 30-minute ride.
