'Confusing, Difficult' NJDOT plans to redevelop notorious Sayreville intersection

A notorious interchange in Sayreville is scheduled for a major redesign.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation is preparing to begin a large-scale project at the intersection of Route 9, Bordentown Avenue, Burlew Place and Eugene Boulevard. Drivers tell News 12 the area is difficult to navigate and prone to accidents.

"It's the most difficult intersection I've ever been to," said East Brunswick resident Ed Vakhler.

NJDOT said the current configuration includes multiple intersections without signals, conflicting traffic patterns and poor sight lines.

State data shows more than 200 crashes were reported in the vicinity between 2014 and 2016.

"Most of the accidents happen because somebody's getting ready to go and then they shortstop and then there's an accident," said Parlin resident Marlin B. "It's 100% confusing. You don't know if you're going to the right or to the left."

The NJDOT plans to reconfigure the interchange by consolidating the four roadways into two roundabouts. One roundabout will be centered around Route 9 southbound traffic, and the other around Route 9 northbound traffic.

The agency also plans to construct additional lanes to improve mobility between Route 9 and the surrounding local roads.

“Our secondary roads, which are generally county roads, are seeing an increased volume because we’re a very popular place to live and a lot of people are moving in,” said Sayreville Business Administrator Glenn Skarzynski. "Over time, more highways are added, more bypasses are added, and it gets to be a little difficult to navigate."

The NJDOT anticipates construction on the project will begin in the spring of 2030 be completed by the fall of 2032.

In the meantime, drivers told News 12 they hope the redesign will simplify travel through the area.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation will host a virtual public information center on the project from April 22 through May 6. More information is available here.
