2ds agoThe Department of Transportation is advocating for a renewal to the city's 30-year-old red-light camera program.
The initiative comes as the program is set to expire in 2024 and the city continues to experience a deadly increase in red-light running.
Officials are pushing a pair of bills. The first would expand the program to 2030. It would also increase the number of intersections with red-light cameras from 150 to 1,325. The second would suspend vehicle registrations of drivers who have five or more red-light camera violations in a year.
Officials say about 2,400 vehicles in 2023 received five or more red-light camera violations over a 12-month period. That research shows drivers who have five violations have triple the risk of being involved in a crash that causes injury.
