The New York State Department of Transportation says new work zone speed cameras put in place this week will only operate when there are workers on the ground.

The state started rolling the new speed cameras out on Monday to make the roads safer.

There are only 30 work zone speed cameras throughout the entire state, and they are not at a fixed location. They are mounted to SUVs and can be moved around every day.

Drivers are only being issued warnings right now. They will start giving out real tickets in about 25 days with fines ranging from $50 to $100, depending on how many offenses have been made.

The state says the idea is to keep workers safe, but some drivers say it's nothing more than a money grab.

"It's important to be safe but that might be going a little overboard," says Ted Pafundi, of South Huntington. "Most people take work zones seriously and this is just a way to raise more revenue."

The work zones protected by speed cameras will have signs letting drivers know a camera is there.

The state will start posting the location of the cameras online starting next week.
