The Department of Transportation has proposed a plan to make Mosholu Parkway safer in response to the 16 injuries that they say happened between 2010 and 2014, including the death of 23-year-old Josbel Rivera.

Rivera’s mother says she returns to the site every year to mourn the night that her son was crossing the street coming back from a holiday party and never made it home on Dec. 26, 2011. She says she is angry because it could have been avoided.

News 12 is told the DOT wants to install a concrete barrier at the pedestrian area between the east and westbound lanes of Mosholu Parkway at Paul Avenue.

With a high school nearby, parents say they are in favor of the proposal.

“I'm happy that another family, at least here, may not have to suffer the same devastation that my family felt,” said Rivera’s mother.

The DOT’s plan was presented to Community Board 7 at the beginning of the month but a decision on its implementation has not yet been reached.
