The Bronx is one of two boroughs in the city that does not have access to Citi Bike.

The Department of Transportation is now reviewing 12 companies that have submitted proposals for dockless bike share in the Bronx.

According to the DOT, those submissions from leading bike share companies would complement the Citi Bike system currently in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

The goal would be to bring more dockless public bike sharing to outerborough neighborhoods.

One bike share option the DOT will review are pedal assist electric bicycles, a popular bike share option in cities such as Washington, D.C.

Citi Bike currently does not use pedal assist electric bikes and their bicycles use docks.

The DOT is also currently evaluating the feasibility of a bike share system operating without a dock.

The DOT’s review of the submissions is ongoing with an announcement about selected proposals expected to be made this summer.
