Over 100 firefighters worked overnight to extinguish a brushfire that stretched up to two acres Friday in Prospect Park. The FDNY said it received the call after 6:40 p.m. and encountered the fire in the middle of the park near Nethermead.
Fire officials described the fire on Friday night as the length of two football fields.
The fire unfolded as the city is in a fire weather warning. Mayor Eric Adams stressed the urgent need for rain.
"I never thought we'd be praying for rain, but we really need rain with all of these leaves and the dry ground and trees. These brushfires, I think this is the third one today," Adams said.
One firefighter sustained a minor injury, according to officials.
The cause of the fire is still being determined. However, officials say it is likely due to the drought, strong winds and low humidity.
