It may not be Halloween yet, but the city’s Department of Sanitation is gearing up for winter weather.

The DSNY is preparing with 300,000 tons of salt and snow training for 6,300 sanitation workers.

To prepare for the new challenges that 2020 has brought to city streets, they have been out driving the snow routes of the city this fall with a focus on outdoor dining.

Acting Sanitation Commissioner Edward Grayson said they support local businesses staying open through the winter and are working with them to make sure they are prepared by keeping streets as wide as possible and keeping their sidewalks clear.

They say it’s not only outdoor dining that adds a wrinkle to the city’s plowing and salt spreading, but masked up New Yorkers as well.

Grayson said everyone needs to have a heightened awareness with more narrow roadways due to dining as well as more pedestrians this year.

Grayson also said to remember to help neighbors with shoveling and not to block hydrants or drains when piling snow.
