E-bike battery charging stations coming to city streets to prevent deadly fires

E-bike riders could soon be able to charge their bikes and scooters on sidewalks in the South Bronx, according to the Department of Transportation.
The Department of Transportation announced the city will begin the process of identifying 25 locations across the city, including parts of the South Bronx to install e-bike battery swapping and charging cabinets.
The cabinets would provide a safe alternative for charging the lithium-ion batteries used to operate the bikes in homes and apartments.
Lithium-ion batteries are responsible for one death, 42 injuries and 245 fires this year as of Nov. 17, according to the FDNY.
"Preventing lithium-ion battery fires is a top priority for the FDNY," said FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker. "Through a robust public education campaign and public outreach, we have been able to make progress in reducing deaths and injuries caused by these devices. By expanding access to safe charging infrastructure in neighborhoods where delivery workers rely on e-bikes the most, the city is taking a critical next step to prevent future tragedies and keep New Yorkers safe."

The exact locations are still being determined, but the DOT says it is focusing on neighborhoods with the highest delivery rates.
According to the department, delivery workers would be able to swap out their batteries in under a minute. They would be required to pay a small fee to utilize the network of cabinets, but those exact details are still being worked out.
The DOT is currently gathering feedback on locations and designs, with the first installations planned for 2027.
