A group of Bronx students had the opportunity to perform at the Democratic National Convention this week and met Vice President Joe Biden.
Students from the Eagle Academy recited "Invictus" by English poet William Ernest Henley. The poem was famously recited by Nelson Mandela when he was in prison.
Eagle Academy students recite the poem every morning before class as a way to start their day.
"When we actually stood up there and recited 'Invictus,' my legs were kind of shaky, but it's like all these people are cheering for us," said one student, Kareem Armfield. "It was an amazing experience."
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was a driving force in the opening of the first Eagle Academy location in the Bronx when she was U.S. senator for New York.
Founded in 2004, the Eagle Academy is a network of six greater New York public schools helping teenage boys achieve academic and personal success.
