Spring is in the air, and it's definitely starting to look that way at the Green-Wood Cemetery in Sunset Park.

It's where many people lay their loved ones to rest, but also home to hundreds of different species of wildlife and nearly 7,000 trees.

The cemetery features a dynamic collection of trees and hundreds of colorful blossoms that have just started to bloom.

"It's exciting, and peaceful and beautiful and just really helps after having such a dark year, it gives you a lot of hope," says Alyssa Garcia, of Sunset Park. "Every season something is beautiful about Green-Wood Cemetery. It is just a magical place."

The world-renowned arboretum is located just blocks away from the busy city streets, and Brookly residents say it is a scenic, peaceful escape from all the hustle and bustle.

"It's great to get lost and just walk around try to find your way back out everything you see is amazing and spectacular," Garcia says.

Members of the horticultural team are responsible for keeping Green-Wood Cemetery looking as pristine and picturesque as ever.

"One of the things that makes it so special is how the anticipation is such a slow build, and then it arrives, and it's here and then its gone," says Sara Evans, manager of horticulture operations Green-Wood Cemetery.

For trees like the saucer magnolia, they bloomed early this year, and they'll only stay in this state for another couple of weeks depending on the weather.

"They're only in bloom for about 10 days. So, soon we are going to see their leaves emerge, so that's how you know the blossoms are nearing their end," Evans says.

Right now, the cemetery has blossomed early spring flowers with more to come throughout the season.

Green-Wood Cemetery is open seven days a week and have just started their extended hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
