East Islip High School officials have decided to remove the controversial Redmen mascot logo from the building.
The mural of the mascot was on the building earlier this month but has since been removed.
Despite the removal of the mascot logo, the words 'Home of the Redmen' remain.
"Taking down the logo is a really great step in the right direction," says Theresa Parker, who graduated from East Islip High School in 2009.
Parker says she used to go to pep rallies and cheer everyone on. She says some people even dressed in red face.
"Probably around the age of 20 is when I realized it was wrong," says Parker. "I didn't realize the extent of it. I guess ignorance is bliss at a younger age."
Last year, she was part of a group that created a change.org petition calling on the district to 'Retire the Redmen' name. The petition currently has just under 15,000 signatures.
"It wasn't just me," says Parker. "It was a whole group of alumni who shared similar values and wanted the school to acknowledge that they were phasing it out."
The district says the school's mascot is not changing but wouldn't elaborate on why the mural was removed.
