Community advocates in the East Ramapo Central School District say they are looking forward to a new chapter under new leadership as Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez takes over as superintendent.

The East Ramapo School District serves 37,000 students from dozens of countries and diverse backgrounds.

Parents whom News 12 has previously interviewed as advocates for the school community expressed optimism about Torres-Rodriguez's appointment.

"I'm expecting a lot from her, and she has our support too," said East Ramapo parent Mery Mora.

Ana Maeda, another district parent, said that she was very happy that the new superintendent was a Hispanic woman.

However, parent advocates say the position comes with significant challenges.

Over the years, the district has faced issues including failed budget votes, financial concerns, transportation problems and absenteeism.

"She has a really, really big challenge to face, but I think we can do it," Mora said.

"I hope she knows that this is a very complex district that comes with a lot of baggage from all the craziness that has happened over the years," Maeda said.

The parents said they want Torres-Rodriguez to be an advocate for the district's children and to lead with transparency.

Torres-Rodriguez's contract ends in July 2029. She previously served for eight years as superintendent of Hartford Public Schools.
