A recently opened electric vehicle charging station is creating congestion inside a busy Pelham Gardens shopping plaza, leaving drivers waiting in long lines and neighbors frustrated.

The charging station, located along Gun Hill Road, opened about three weeks ago and has quickly become a hotspot for electric vehicle drivers—many of them taxi drivers—looking to recharge before heading back out on their routes.

But with wait times stretching to around 30 minutes to a hour, lines of cars are now backing up throughout the shopping plaza, snarling traffic and impacting nearby businesses.

Drivers say they understand the frustration from residents but argue there simply aren’t enough charging options across the city.

“You don’t have as many options for Tesla chargers,” said Joe Ryan, an EV driver. “So, either you pay for parking in a garage or you need to come up here in the Bronx. They could use some more superchargers throughout the city and the boroughs around it.”

Security has since stepped in to help manage the congestion, ensuring access remains clear—especially near the Dunkin’ drive-through—while attempting to ease traffic inside the plaza.
