A Bronx doctor who was on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic is being recognized by Essence magazine as it celebrates essential heroes.
Dr. Sarah Jamison, an emergency medical physician at St. Barnabas Hospital, says she doesn't know who nominated her but is one of 52 essential heroes honored.
Jamison did her residency at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi and Montefiore Medical Center, and has been working at St. Barnabas ever since.
She says that working day in and day out on the front lines was heartbreaking, as the Bronx was hit hard by COVID-19 - and Hispanic and Black people died at a much higher rate.
Jamison says she wasn't expecting the recognition from Essence, but is thankful.
The virtual celebration for the heroes will be held Sunday.
