A humanitarian event Saturday aimed to help those affected by November's severe floods in the Dominican Republic.
Weeks of rainfall devastated the Caribbean nation, flooding more than 4,000 homes and displacing more than 20,000 people, according to officials.
State Sen. Ruben Diaz organized Saturday's relief effort. Community members raised more than $10,000 to send to the Dominican Republic. They also provided things like flu vaccines, clothing, shoes and nonperishable food items.
Donations from the event will be loaded onto a ship in Brooklyn that leaves on Jan. 4. The shipment is expected to reach the Dominican Republic by Jan. 11.
