A pilot who made aviation history is now making history in education.
Capt. Barrington Irving, the first African American to fly around the world solo, launched a program that is incorporated in curriculums of select Catholic schools across Brooklyn and Queens.
"The Flying Classroom" is a program that lets him use his aviation skills to provide students with a different way of learning. Students at Our Lady of Perpetual Help were able to meet with Irving in a special assembly.
Irving previously held the Guinness World Records for being the first and youngest African American pilot to fly solo around the world in 2007. A few years later, he started the program with the Diocese of Brooklyn.
