A family says it is taking action in response to bullying and attack on their daughter at Central Islip High School.
A news conference was held by the family's attorney Wednesday in Hauppauge, at which the girl's father was pushing for his daughter's school to take further action to prevent bullying. The father says his daughter was punched in the head in an incident he says was recorded on a phone.
A video taken in a hallway shows a student running up from behind, attacking and punching a girl.
Attorney Kenneth Mollins says his client, a 14-year-old ninth grade high school student, was in the hallway walking to class and was attacked by another female student. They say no teachers or security were in the hallway during the time of this incident.
Mollins says his client and her friend were verbally threatened in art class by the same students the day before the attack.
The family is suing the district for $2 million for emotional and medical costs.
News 12 reached out to Suffolk police. They confirmed to News 12 that police arrested a 14-year-old girl for punching another 14-year-old in the face.
The girl was charged with assault and was released to her mother. They say the victim was treated at South Shore University Hospital for minor injuries.
The district says it can't comment during pending litigation, but it says safety is its obligation and that it is taking proactive approaches to prevent physical engagements between students.
