The family of a man who nearly lost a hand in a dog attack wants to know why the dog was allowed to go home.

A young girl was walking the dog when it got out of her control and attacked Abdul Hakim, a 72-year-old grandfather who was walking with his 9-year-old grandson, Nabil, on East 204th Street.

Hakim was able to return home Wednesday following a four-day stay in the hospital. His family tells News 12 The Bronx that they learned the dog who bit him is also back home with its owner - two blocks away.

Hakim's injuries were so severe that he needed a skin graft. 

Family members say they have talked to police and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. However, they say they've been unable to find out who the dog belongs to and whether it was up to date on its shots. They learned the dog had returned home when following up with the DOH Thursday.

Police say the owner is not expected to face criminal charges since the attack was an accident. The dog would be quarantined inside its owner's home for an undetermined amount of time.

News 12 asked the DOH how it was mitigating the threat from the dog. A representative said the department was investigating the incident.
