Some young, minority fathers in the Bronx are receiving support through a special program at Hostos Community College.

The CUNY Fatherhood Academy helps black and Latino fathers between the ages of 18 and 24 navigate their way through school, youth and parenthood.

The college was recently awarded more than $440,000 to help young fathers prepare for and enroll in college and/or training programs. Above all, the Fatherhood Academy aims to help them pass the high school equivalency test needed to get into college.

Instructors say the program helps young fathers stay focused on the long-term goal of obtaining a college degree.

The free program began in 2012 as part of the NYC Young Men's Initiative.
