A four-alarm fire broke out at a three-story building in Soundview Friday morning, fire officials say.

They say they got the call at 6:10 a.m. for the fire at Watson and Evergreen avenues.

It took firefighters over an hour to extinguish the fire that left dozens of people living in the building's 40 units without a place to live.

"The heat takes a toll on your members and that's one of things we have to be careful with," said the assistant fire chief. "But we had enough resources to get everyone out."

The FDNY reported that six firefighters and three civilians suffered injuries from the fire, two of which are considered serious.

News 12 is told 168 firefighters were on the scene, and the third floor is very badly burned.

Firefighters were seen climbing and breaking dozens of windows to try to extinguish the fire on the roof of the building.

Residents of the apartment tell News 12 they didn't hear an alarm go off and had no idea there was even a fire.

Some tenants even believe that the fire was set on purpose.

"I'm sure they did this fire to get rid of the people," a tenant said. "I went to court four times because they wanted to evict me. Most of the people here are paying low rent."

An emergency unit was also on scene to assist firemen and tenants of the building.

Residents were seen lining the sidewalk with their clothes and personal items, waiting for a Red Cross buss to pick them up and take them to a hotel. Others who have relatives to stay with were packing their cars.

Two years ago, there was a fire in the neighboring building. That building is now empty.

Fire officials do not know what started the fire yet and are checking to see if the fire alarms work.
