Monday marks the 60th anniversary of a large fire that killed six city firefighters and prompted officials to modernize safety measures.
The fire began in the basement of a furniture store on Third Avenue and spread upward. The front of the building then collapsed on firefighters battling the blaze.
The FDNY honored their families and unveiled a new memorial plaque Monday. Hundreds of current firefighters attended.
The tragedy prompted the FDNY to improve its procedures, and officials say crews had to use those skills on a Parkside Avenue fire in Brooklyn Sunday.
