A steam link in the boiler of Melrose apartment building sent eight people to the hospital, the FDNY says.

At around 9:30 p.m. Saturday, an unknown smell at 830 Elton Ave. started to make people sick. News 12 spoke with a resident who described the smell as a pungent gas order that made you feel nauseous.

On-site crews discovered a steam leak in the boiler. An hour later they began to air out the building. Residents say they waited out in the cold for about 2-3 hours.

Eight people were taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln. There was no update on their condition.

Tenants say they have not had heat or hot water since the leak and have no idea as to when it will be turned back on.
