A manhole fire turned destructive as it spread to a nearby welding and metal shop on Tuesday.

Firefighters responded to a call of a fire at 1661 Boone Ave. at around 2:19 p.m.

It took 79 firefighters and EMS personnel to contain the flames almost an hour later.

One firefighter was treated for minor injuries.

Niko, the owner of Lindi Construction, says he was trying to assess the damages from the manhole fire spreading into this business.

"The main damage is our downstairs, but I haven't been able to go inside because they don't allow us to go inside downstairs. Upstairs, they got the roof. They damaged some areas," he said.

Niko said he was notified of the issue by two employees who were inside the shop when they heard a loud noise that sounded like an explosion and saw the smoke.

At the scene, Con Edison appeared to be working on the site of where the manhole fire happened and told News 12 that no power outages were reported.
