Officials say two firefighters and two tenants were injured in a five-alarm fire Monday in Morris Heights.

Crews responded to the fire at a six-story building at 1750 Montgomery Ave. just before 12 p.m.

Over a dozen displaced families took shelter in the cafeteria of P.S. 109 Monday evening.

Fire officials say the fire started in the area between the ceiling and roof of the building, although the cause is still unknown. There is word that work was being done on the roof when the flames erupted.

Cellphone video captured smoke billowing from the building. 

The midday fire was contained after two hours, with more than 200 firefighters helping to put out the flames.

"Upon arrival we experienced heavy fire on the top portion of the building and in the cockloft of the building as well," says Chief James Leonard.

Once the fire was contained, many residents were able to grab some of their most important belongings.

The American Red Cross is now working to determine whether a temporary shelter is needed for those who have been displaced by the fire.
