Ringing in the New Year means setting new fitness goals for many people.

Fitness is a priority every day at John's Boxing Gym in Castle Hill. Coach Christopher Bailey pushes his trainees to their maximum potential.

"I work 'em to the bone," Bailey said. "They let me know, 'we're not feeling you today, coach,' and I don't care. We got to do better because it's not for me. It's for you, there's a reward in the work that you put in."

But the new year brings a renewed mentality for many, including state boxing champion Januel Cabrera.

"Tonight, I'm going to just relax, enjoy myself," Cabrera said. "And then my mindset is, I got to be back here tomorrow in the morning. We just got to get right back to it."

The gym is not just for boxing champions -- it's also for people who are simply looking to get in shape.

"Try to lose a little bit [of] weight," gymgoer and Castle Hill resident Angel Leon said about his new year's goals. "Sometimes I feel tired. When I come to the gym and train, I feel completely different."

Bailey also shared his advice for people with fitness goals in the new year.

"Just get up and do it," Bailey said. "One step at a time. If the thought is there. Just get up and move."

John's Boxing Gym also has its goals for the new year. There are plans for more workout classes for women, for both self-defense and conditioning.
