A crowd gathered Saturday for Hoops for Justice, a basketball tournament and memorial service for two members of the Flatbush community who were killed by members of the NYPD.
Music, food and even a health booth were set up in Tilden Park Saturday as the entire neighborhood gathered to honor the lives of 23-year-old Shantel Davis and 16-year-old Kimani Gray.
Davis died in 2012 after she was shot by an NYPD officer during a chase in which officials say she was driving a stolen car.
Gray died a year later in 2012, when he was shot seven times by officers who said he was carrying a gun.
Children played in the basketball tournament Saturday followed by a memorial.
At the memorial, they were reminded that they could do anything they put their mind to.
At one point, the festivities were paused to remember those who were lost, and red and silver balloons were released into the air.
Family members hope this event will encourage children in the community to take charge of their future, while also remembering their rights.
