Ida brought soaking rains and even caused a tree to fall just over a week ago on Jefferson Avenue in Plainfield, but only half of the street is considered a federal disaster area.
Homes on the Plainfield side are not eligible for federal relief because they are in Union County, but the homes on the Dunellen side are eligible because they are in Middlesex County.
Plainfield Mayor Adrian Mapp says he's astonished that Union County has not been included.
“It's incredible in my mind that as of now, a week after this storm has caused such devastation, that we are still fighting over whether or not Plainfield and Union County and other parts of the state ought to be declared a disaster area eligible for federal funding,” says Mayor Mapp.
Gov. Phil Murphy says he expects FEMA to increase the number of counties in the disaster zone. It's unclear when that will happen.
