Health officials are reaching out to inform community members about Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October.

The American Cancer Society says 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer, making it the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in women.

The group also spoke about how early detection could lead to a more successful treatment.

"Nobody is going to be able to tell you does this hurt or does that hurt,” Marlene Medina, from American Cancer Society says. “If you feel something that is off, go to your doctor.”

The American Cancer Society says the most-common symptom is a lump in the breast. The group encourages women to get mammograms and screening tests.

There will be a walk at Orchard Beach this month in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
