Dozens of e-bikes, scooters, and even a rusted metal barrel were pulled from the Bronx River Sunday as a group of volunteers worked to clean up the waterway in Starlight Park.
The group, known online as Let’s Get Magnetic on YouTube, uses powerful magnets to “fish” for metal debris. What began as a hobby for their YouTube channel has turned into an ongoing environmental effort.
James Kane said he and his crew discovered the extent of the problem two years ago and have been returning to the river regularly to help.
“Someone’s got to do it,” he said.
Many of the scooters and bikes are barely recognizable, caked in algae and rusted after years underwater.
“I’d give or take two to three years on some of them especially when they have green algae growing on them,” Kane said.
The team says the underwater litter, especially from lithium batteries, poses a serious threat to the ecosystem.
“Pollution and gasoline and all the other chemicals that you may find on scooters and bikes – it makes me sad that fish are living around that stuff,” said volunteer Jose Salles.
“It’s absolutely terrible for the ecosystem,” Kane added. “Kills fish, kills turtles. Chemicals leak out. Changes everything in the water. And this river is polluted with hundreds of them.”
The group volunteers without compensation from the city. Once bikes and scooters are removed, they contact the respective companies to arrange for pickup.
“I love my city,” Kane said. “I love New York City and the Bronx River. It just feels special to me.”
