Gov. Kathy Hochul says big changes are coming to New York City’s subways, just weeks after a rider was slashed on a 4 train in Crown Heights. The attack happened March 9 at the Utica Avenue station, where police say a man slashed another rider in the face before running off. The victim survived, and the suspect is still on the loose. Now, as part of the new state budget, the governor says millions are being invested to improve safety and access across the system. Some of the key upgrades include: Platform barriers at 100 additional stations Brighter LED lighting on platforms Modern turnstiles that are harder to jump or crawl under Two NYPD officers on every overnight train Continued presence of National Guard in subway stations Systemwide camera upgrades Expanded ADA accessibility for riders with disabilities "We're going to be getting those [new turnstiles] out there," Hochul said at a news conference Thursday. “So those shameless fare evaders—everybody doing this—we’re going to stop them.” The governor also announced new investments in mental health outreach teams and housing to support New Yorkers struggling in subways and on city streets.
