The 14-year-old boy accused of killing 16-year-old Evette Jeffrey during a schoolyard fight pleaded not guilty in court. The teen, who cannot be identified due to his age, appeared virtually from a hospital bed.
Jeffery's grandfather, Ferdinand Abad told News 12 that they knew the boy and he had even been over their house previously.
"My family is hurting, everybody is losing, loosing just like he killed her, he lost his life now, too," said Abad.
Anti-gun violence activist along with Jeffery's mother rallied outside the Bronx Latin schoolyard on Union Avenue and East 167th Street calling for an end to the senseless violence.
“It’s unacceptable it’s not normal and we are here to do our part and let them know stop shooting and start living we have resources, "said Marisol Rivera, with Save our Streets.
Jeffery's mother said she was out celebrating her one-year anniversary with her boyfriend on Monday when they stopped by the school on the way to the movies. The teen was riding a scooter when a fight broke out between two students.
Investigators say the 14-year-old was punched in the face by another student, the physical fight turned deadly when someone handed the 14-year-old a gun. He shot at least three times into a group of 20 students; Jeffery was hit by a stray bullet.
Jeffery was a student at Morris High School and had just celebrated her 16th birthday in April.
Her family is now planning funeral arrangements for May 17.
