Sept. 11 first responders and those who cleaned up ground zero have until Sunday to register for disability benefits.
The New York State Workers’ Compensation Board program helps people who became disabled as a result of World Trade Center-linked illnesses. However, those who register are not required to be sick.
Originally, eligible individuals had until 2010 to file for protection, but there have been three extensions of that deadline.
Gov. Hochul is currently reviewing a law that would extend the deadline until 2026, though there is no word yet on when a decision could be made for that proposal.
