A city transportation group is calling on the Department of Transportation to install protected bike lanes and other safety measures along the Grand Concourse.
Transportation Alternatives has been working to have the project completed for the past two years.
It says it wants protective pedestrian islands, bike lanes and a designated bus lane as part of the "Complete the Concourse Initiative."
The group says there have been 1,000 people injured on the Grand Concourse with 13 fatalities over the past four years.
The group says safety measures like a designated bike lane for the entire concourse would help save lives.
Currently bikers have a designated lane for about 10 blocks of the 8-mile long Grand Concourse.
Transportation Alternatives is pushing to get a study done by the DOT in hopes of getting changes implemented along the Grand Concourse.
