A total of 400,000 New York City official trash bins are already out and about in our community.
On Tuesday, the new mandate came into effect: if you live in a one- to nine-unit residential building, your trash must be contained in a 55-gallon or smaller container with a lid.
Residents have until June 2026 for these bins to be replaced with the official city bins, but for now, it is important to adhere to the
new guidlines before the city rolls out fines, starting Jan. 2.
The initiative comes as the city aims to get the trash off the streets.
The newly designed bins also have a latch to deter rodents from making their way in.
The lids will also attempt to keep the garbage and its smell contained to the inside of the bins.
