Historical society’s proposed dig faces resistance from developers
A historical society wanting to uncover relics from the Revolutionary War in the Bronx is facing opposition to its proposed archeological dig.
A plot of land in Spuyten Duyvil was once used as a fort during the Revolutionary War, and could contain artifacts of the past.
Nick Dembowski, president of the Kingsbridge Historical Society, is proposing the dig for exactly that reason, but is facing opposition from home developers in the area.
The developers said that if the dig comes up with anything on the site, anything they find must go to them.
Dembowski says he’s not opposed to the construction, just that he wants the opportunity to conduct a dig first to possibly preserve historical remnants.
He’s hoping to get enough community support to change the developers’ mind.
Dembowski says the dig could take as little as a week, and wouldn’t delay any construction of the site.
News 12 has contacted the developers for a statement, and is waiting to hear back.
