A boy who overcame a rare disease was honored Monday by the hospital that helped him get better.
Just two years ago, Gabriel Sanchez was crippled by a rare genetic immune disorder and fighting for his life at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital.
The 13-year-old received a stem cell transplant and is now clear of the disease.
The hospital is honoring Gabriel by making him grand marshal for the 11th annual Go the Distance Walk and Run for the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. It is the largest fundraising event for the hospital, which specializes in treating sick children.
The event kicks off at 9:30 a.m. on May 3 outside the medical center.
