East Tremont Avenue and East 180th Street is undergoing a commercial revitalization study.
A melting pot of culture lives on East Tremont Avenue.
"We have people from Central America, from South America, from Africa, from the Middle East," said William Foster, the executive director for the Neighborhood Initiatives Development Corporation.
The Neighborhood Initiatives Development Corporation, along with local community groups, elected officials and the NYC Department of Small Business Services are working to revitalize the bustling commercial strip.
"There is so much energy and positive engagement that people want to live here, make their communities happier, healthier and safer, " said Foster.
Over the next three years, Foster and his team will be working to build a commercial needs assessment for the neighborhood to determine what is needed to help the area flourish.
"Safety is really the No. 1 issue if you're here after dark," said Foster.
Parking and business security, as well as rising rents for businesses, are also top priority.
Foster says their first goal is to create a Merchants Association so they can better address priorities of businesses.
According to Foster, 80% of the businesses on East Tremont and East 180th Street are minority and woman-owned.
"They lack the support and infrastructure to help them thrive... being able to create a merchants association, and be able to listen to what the merchants identify as what they want to be doing, what they think they need help with, because it's very easy to come in and think, well, based on our research, we think we know what you need," said Foster.
The Community Revitalization team wants feedback from the community who lives, works and shops on East Tremont and East 180th Street.
