P.S. 25 Bilingual School launched a new green classroom Monday where education officials say the joy of learning meets the science of sustainability.
The brand-new hydroponic classroom is filled with fresh and nutritious fruits and veggies such as tomatoes, watermelon and green peppers. The initiative is part of the school’s plan to create a healthy future for its students, staff and South Bronx community.
The Bilingual School is one of four being sponsored by the New York Power Authority's Environmental Justice program, which partners with New York Sun Works to teach students about the wonders of science. This includes how to grow produce without soil and the importance of being environmentally responsible.
Monday’s event marked stage two of an ambitious plan for the school. Next, their goal is to build a community kitchen and food pantry that they say would be accessible to the entire community.
