UPDATE: The water main has been fixed and service has been restored, DEP official says. Original story is below.

Crews from the Department of Environmental Protection continued repairs Saturday following a water main break Friday in Morrisania.

They were on the scene near Crotona Park and Prospect avenues, where icy conditions coated sidewalks and roadways. Much of the area was frozen over, with ice and mud covering the street. Water was still being pumped through a hose as crews dug into the roadway to locate and stop the source of the break.

Residents said the flooding caused significant damage. Several low‑lying vehicles were frozen to the ground after water rushed down the street. One man said his car would not start. Another resident, who declined to be identified, said his basement was destroyed by flooding.

“The water was up to my waist,” the resident said. “You know in the summer how they turn on the fire hydrants — that’s what my basement looked like.”

By Saturday afternoon, Sanitation crews were salting the roadway to reduce icy conditions as DEP crews continued repair work.
